Keynote 3: Mpox – from neglected tropical disease to outbreak of global concern

A global outbreak of mpox emerged during spring 2022, disproportionally affecting individuals within sexual networks of men who have sex with men (MSM). Incidence peaked in July 2022 in Sweden and started decreasing before vaccination became widely available. There are several hypothesis to explain the course of the epidemic : The impact of immunity due to vaccination or asymptomatic infections, the achievement of a “herd immunity” within high risk groups, as well as the effect of  behavioural changes and dissemination of information  within the MSM community. This session will discuss lessons learnt regarding clinical, microbiological and epidemiological aspects. Knowledge gaps and updates on recent developments will be presented as well as results from a multinational monkeypox study on vaccination.

Moderator: Dr. Finn Filén, Södersjukhuset

Speakers: Klara Sondén, Folkhälsomyndigheten,  Liem Binh Luong Nguyen, Hôpitaux Universitaires Paris Centre
